After the fires in Los Angeles, it felt inappropriate to look back on the Golden Globes or even think of all the award shows to come. Some even suggested canceling the remainder of the award season since the city of LA was struggling so badly. I didn’t want to start this newsletter without acknowledging the tragic fires, which didn’t only affect celebrities in LA but the many everyday people who live there who don’t have the money to rebuild their homes or access to several other properties to stay at. However, I wanted to share this newsletter not only because it was a major accomplishment for my two interviewees, and I think they deserve to celebrate their experience, but because I know how many people look forward to award season.

I am one of them because although it may seem out of touch watching all these wealthy celebrities in designer gowns celebrating themselves, it is a form of entertainment, and this would be a bleak, depressing world without the entertainment industry. I saw a TikTok last night where user @ajdronkers recited a quote from the AIDs epidemic: “Bury your friends in the morning, protest in the afternoon, and then dance all night.” He added, “The dancing is what kept them in the fight.” No matter what is going on in the world, you have permission to keep dancing because allowing yourself to feel joy is what is going to get you and everyone around you through the darkest times. I hope this newsletter can bring you joy no matter what you are going through right now.

I interviewed my sister Maria for my first paid newsletter a year ago. It was a discussion on The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course because we both love and admire Steve Irwin and his family. However, I never interviewed our friend Allie Joseph before, but she did make it into my December newsletter as Movie Mondays’ person of the year. While they both accomplished so much in 2024, they were only getting started as, just a few days into the new year, they headed off to LA to shoot The Golden Globes red carpet.
